Sometimes just volunteering for an event or an organization can put you at the right place at the right time. This can be an awesome experience. I am a witness to that. I volunteered for an organization and found myself in a position where I was no longer able to volunteer. I disclosed to them my situation at the time and they offered me a position there. I felt truly blessed to be in the right place at the right time. When you are volunteering, possibly look at that situation as a temporary measure.
